Kinshasa, August 19, 2024 (Fatshimétrie) – The energy sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing a major challenge in terms of electricity production. Electricity imports, vital to overcome the energy deficit in the country, are now formally exempt from customs duties, according to the decrees published in the recently consulted editions of the Official Journal.

Indeed, the electricity deficit in the DRC is estimated at more than 5,500 megawatts, while the current production capacity is capped at 2,500 megawatts.

This situation has a direct impact on the country’s business climate, with the DRC being penalized in international rankings due to its electricity supply difficulties.
