Improving the emergency life support system in the Democratic Republic of Congo: A crucial priority to save lives

Fatshimetrie, August 16, 2024 – Establishing a vital emergency system in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become a top priority to reduce the alarming mortality rate in the country. In Boma, Kongo Central, Dr. Jean-Claude Kikwata emphasizes the urgency of organizing such a system to save lives that could be saved if care were faster and more effective.

During the commemoration of the deaths on August 1, it became clear that many lives could be saved if adequate measures were put in place in the event of an emergency. According to a survey conducted in 2023 in Boma, a large part of the population is ready to intervene in the event of an emergency, but the lack of medicalized ambulances and appropriate equipment is a major obstacle.

Statistics show that 75% of emergency patients at Boma hospital are destitute, without means and health coverage, and 13% of them die. For Dr. Kikwata, the key lies in raising awareness among the population about the importance of acting quickly in an emergency and in promoting medical specialization for better care.

To improve the vital emergency system in the DRC, it is essential to set up a call regulation agency, train qualified emergency personnel, provide equipped ambulances, and strengthen emergency reception structures. In addition, it is essential that the State subsidize hospitals to ensure equitable care for destitute patients.

In conclusion, the organization of a brainstorming workshop with all stakeholders to rethink the emergency health system in the DRC is essential. It is imperative to put in place concrete measures to save lives that could be preserved with adequate and rapid care. The time has come to act to ensure equitable access to emergency care for all Congolese citizens.
