Food tragedy in Sokoto State: Family wiped out after eating cassava

In a tragic incident that has rocked the community in Sokoto State, Nigeria, a family of seven has been reported dead after consuming a cassava meal. The village head, Malam Muhammadu Modi, briefed the Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, on the development during his visit accompanied by a delegation to the area.

The victims, who included the father, Malam Abubakar, his wife A’ishatu and their five children, shared the cassava meal during dinner last Wednesday. The exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed as the same cassava was reportedly consumed by several other households in the village without any illness being reported.

The village head expressed gratitude to Governor Dr. Ahmed Aliyu for his concern. Commissioner Balarabe explained that the delegation’s visit was to investigate the incident and report to the state government. Samples will be taken from a surviving adolescent who also consumed the cassava meal.

In this difficult time, residents are urged to promptly report any unusual symptoms and take extra precautions. The Regional Health Director, Sani Bello Tambuwal, expressed gratitude for the Commissioner’s concern and expressed hope for continued support.
