Introduction :
As part of the East African Community (EAC)-led peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni met with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. This meeting took place at State House Entebbe and was also attended by the Peace Process Secretariat. The two leaders discussed the security situation in the EAC region and ongoing actions to achieve lasting peace and stability in eastern DR Congo. This meeting was also an opportunity for President Museveni to discuss with the leaders of the M23 rebellion.

Context :
Eastern DR Congo has been an unstable region for almost three decades, with the presence of more than 130 armed groups. Since November 2021, the Congolese army, the FARDC, has been fighting against the M23 rebels. Faced with this situation, the East African Community has engaged in mediation to promote the peace process in the DR Congo.

The meeting :
During their meeting at State House Entebbe, Yoweri Museveni and Uhuru Kenyatta discussed progress in the ongoing peace process in DR Congo. They received a status report and assessed the progress made so far. This meeting also allowed President Museveni to dialogue with the leaders of the M23 rebellion, including Lawrence Kanyuka, Castro Mbera, Bisimwa and others.

The search for peace:
The search for peace in DR Congo is a priority for the East African Community. Efforts are aimed at ending the cycle of violence and instability in the eastern region of the country. By working with stakeholders, including rebel leaders, it is hoped that lasting solutions can be found and implemented.
