North Kivu: Precarious security despite efforts, the DRC calls for a redoubling of efforts to guarantee peace

Precarious security in the province of North Kivu: the DRC calls for a redoubling of efforts to guarantee the safety of all

Despite the efforts made in recent weeks to improve the security situation in North Kivu, the province remains a concern. The VPM, Minister of National Defense and former combatants, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, has indeed revealed that the elements of the M23/RDF coalition would consider resuming hostilities.

According to the minutes of the last meeting of the Council of Ministers, this Friday, May 19, the VPM expressed its concerns about the strengthening of the M23 / RDF devices in the territories of Masisi and Rutshuru. He also considers that the resumption of hostilities with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) is imminent.

Despite the recovery of some of the rebel strongholds by the regional force EACRF, created in 2022 to stop the advance of the armed group M23, the security situation in the eastern part of the DRC remains very fragile. The cohabitation between the rebels and the regional force does not satisfy the Congolese authorities, who also denounce the interpretation of the mandate of officials from troop-contributing countries.

Faced with this situation, Kinshasa turns to the SADC, in search of help and new means of guaranteeing the safety of all. Pending concrete actions, the DRC calls for a redoubling of efforts by all parties to bring peace and stability to the region, based on the agreements signed in Angola and Kenya.
