The commitment of Congolese women for an equal and prosperous future

Kinshasa, August 8, 2024 – On this day marking the fifth anniversary of the Feminist Movement “Biso Basi Telema”, Congolese women gather in Gombe, in the heart of Kinshasa, to celebrate not only the fight for their rights but above all to call for an awakening of consciousness in favor of the social development of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Under the theme “Talent and innovation of women for peacebuilding and development in Africa, context of the DRC”, this commemoration resonates as a vibrant call for the commitment of women in the construction of an egalitarian and prosperous society. Princillia Masengu, spokesperson for “Biso Basi Telema”, underlines the importance of raising women’s awareness, inviting them to stand up to defend their rights and actively contribute to the development of their country.

It highlights the essential role of women in society, emphasizing that they must not just passively observe but must instead fully engage alongside men to build a better future. On this International African Women’s Day, the message is clear: women have a crucial role to play in the transformation of Africa and its nations.

Women’s political engagement is also at the heart of the debates, with Winnie Litofe of MONUSCO calling on the various women’s associations to actively participate in political life and relay the message of their involvement. Because, as Litofe states, peace and security cannot be guaranteed without the participation of all citizens, including women.

“Biso Basi Telema” has carried out numerous actions over the past five years, ranging from conferences to training workshops to awareness-raising in urban and rural areas. This movement, which advocates for gender equality and non-discrimination, is now considering extending its action to rural areas to reach a wider audience and continue its awareness-raising work.

In celebrating this fifth anniversary, “Biso Basi Telema” is committed to continuing its fight for women’s rights, with a cultural evening planned soon to continue raising awareness and promoting gender equality at all levels of Congolese society.

In conclusion, this commemoration of the “Biso Basi Telema” Feminist Movement is a powerful reminder of the strength and determination of Congolese women to play an active role in building a better future for all. It is time for society to fully recognize the value and potential of women, and fully integrate them into development and peace processes for a more balanced and prosperous Congo.
