Protest Management: Towards a Peaceful and Constructive Approach in Cross River

Commissioner Odere’s recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Calabar highlighted key points on the management of protests. Citing the Cross River State government’s firm stance against violent protests following the significant destruction during the EndSARS protests, Odere stressed the importance of not allowing such a scenario to recur.

The decision not to tolerate violent protests is based on the realization of the costs involved in repairing or replacing damaged properties. This position has been supported by the people of Cross River, demonstrating their commitment to non-violent protests. According to the Commissioner, promoting peace in all circumstances is essential.

The economic consequences of the ongoing protests are severe, with the closure of many public and private businesses having a significant impact. Odere emphasized that while the country faces challenges, violence does not solve anything. Protest should be a means of making demands heard and inciting change, but preserving the integrity and fundamental rights of each individual.

The government led by Gov. Bassey Otu is aware of the current situation in the country and is committed to instituting reforms aimed at improving the living conditions of the people of Cross River. In this period of change and uncertainty, the need for positive and constructive reforms is felt more than ever.

Thus, the consolidation of a society based on mutual respect, justice and peaceful coexistence is paramount to the future of Cross River. Protests can be a vehicle for change, but they must be done in a manner that respects democratic principles and human rights. Establishing an open and constructive dialogue is essential to advancing demands peacefully and effectively.
