The story of the “IgboMustGo” campaign: Between ethnic tensions and a call for peace
For several weeks, Nigeria has been the scene of ethnic tensions exacerbated by a campaign called “IgboMustGo”. Initiated by an anonymous Yoruba group on social networks, this campaign aims to expel the Igbo community from the southwest region of the country. Faced with this rise in hostility, the pro-independence organization “People of Biafra” (IPOB) responded by denouncing the political leaders of the region who, according to them, do not take this xenophobic campaign seriously.
In a statement issued by IPOB’s Director of Communication, Emma Powerful, the group accuses influential figures within the Lagos State and federal governments of being the instigators of the “IgboMustGo” campaign. Tensions reached their peak when Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, criticized for his hypocrisy, publicly condemned the campaign after being accused of having himself contributed to the ethnicization of relations between the different communities.
Despite the threats made by the initiators of the campaign, IPOB claims not to be intimidated and says it is ready to leave Nigeria peacefully via a referendum, if necessary. The Igbos are resolute and determined to preserve peace and good neighborly relations. The organization also calls for respect for democratic rights and demands the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the emblematic leader of the independence movement, as well as the organization of a referendum to allow the Igbos to decide their destiny between Nigeria and Biafra.
Beyond political tensions and inflammatory speeches, it is essential to remember that peaceful coexistence between the different communities of Nigeria is based on mutual respect, tolerance and recognition of each other’s rights. The country’s ethnic and cultural diversity must be seen as a source of wealth and not as a source of division and conflict.
In conclusion, the “IgboMustGo” campaign highlights the challenges facing Nigeria in terms of social cohesion and national unity. It is imperative that political leaders and civil society commit to inter-community dialogue, reconciliation and the promotion of a culture of peace to ensure a harmonious and prosperous future for all Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic origin.
