Province of Beni in the DRC: New terrorist attack in the village of Kanyamutsitsa

For several years, the province of Beni in the Democratic Republic of Congo has faced growing insecurity. The terrorists of the Democratic and Allied forces (ADF) sowing terror in the civilian population there. On the night of Thursday, June 02, 2023, a new attack was carried out by these attackers in the village of Kanyamutsitsa, leaving 9 dead and several missing.

This attack was condemned by local authorities as well as civil society. Roger Wangeve, president of the latter, calls on the army to reinforce patrols to put an end to these attacks and this butchery imposed on the inhabitants of Beni. He also deplores that the assailants looted the property of civilian populations before killing and kidnapping them.

Unfortunately, this attack is far from being the first in the zone. The ADF are said to be seeking revenge for the losses suffered when the army destroyed one of their camps. This situation of growing insecurity worries the civilian population and the international community.

In this difficult context, it is important to point out the positive developments in the province. Initiatives by the international community, such as the investigation by the International Criminal Court into crimes against humanity in the province of Lituri, are important steps in the fight for lasting peace in the DRC. Similarly, the progress of the extraordinary summit of the East African Community for the security of eastern DRC is encouraging.

The situation in the DRC is complex, affecting many areas such as security, justice and food crises. It is essential that local and international actors work together to find lasting and effective solutions to these problems.
