Promoting family planning among young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Fatshimetrie, July 11, 2024 – The “Women and Society” foundation recently organized a morning of discussions in Mont-Ngafula, west of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, around the theme of family planning. This event was held in honor of World Population Day celebrated annually on July 11.

During these discussions, the young people present had the opportunity to take part in constructive discussions on the importance of family planning as an essential factor in economic and social development. Bob Tshitenge, the coordinator of the NGO, highlighted the positive impact of family planning in the fight against maternal mortality and in the promotion of social balance.

He also highlighted the importance of raising awareness among young people, particularly adolescent girls, on aspects related to family planning to promote collective awareness. By investing in young people, the “Women and Society” foundation seeks to create an environment conducive to their development, by implementing comprehensive educational programs in sexual and reproductive health.

Furthermore, it is essential to recognize the challenges faced by adolescents, particularly in terms of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and sexual violence. Young people constitute a significant part of the global population and deserve special attention to ensure their well-being and contribute to the future of society as a whole.

Raising awareness about family planning cannot be limited to young girls; it is also crucial to inform and involve young boys in these discussions. With this in mind, initiatives aimed at introducing notions of family planning into Mont-Ngafula schools are planned to reach a wider audience and promote mutual understanding of issues related to sexual and reproductive health.

At the national level, reflection on family planning as a driver of economic and social development is of capital importance to guarantee the health and well-being of young people, as well as to promote their access to education, employment and promising future prospects. Taking into account the demographic dividend and the reduction in fertility is part of a global vision aimed at resolving demographic challenges and promoting sustainable development.

In short, raising awareness of family planning among young people is a crucial issue that deserves sustained attention from social and political actors. By investing in the sexual and reproductive health of young people and promoting inclusive policies, it is possible to promote harmonious and balanced development of Congolese society.. The “Women and Society” foundation is therefore committed to continuing its actions in favor of young people for a better and more promising future for all.
