**The fight against disinformation: a crucial issue for the preservation of peace**
In a context marked by instability and armed conflicts, disinformation and rumors are proving to be formidable scourges, which can lead to unbearable human tragedies. Recently, the regions of Butembo and Lubero, in the province of North Kivu, were the scene of lynching scenes of incredible violence, caused by false information.
The consequences of these acts are tragic, with fifteen people killed in the space of two weeks, including some soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). Under the influence of anger and emotion, citizens, fed by unfounded rumors, acted blindly, thus harming the lives of their own fellow citizens.
Faced with this increase in violence fueled by disinformation, it is imperative to remember that no cause, however legitimate, can justify such barbaric acts. It is essential to preserve the primacy of law, justice and reason, to prevent the spiral of violence from spiraling further.
Local authorities and international organizations, such as MONUSCO, have a crucial role to play in combating disinformation. Raising public awareness, verifying facts and promoting responsible and ethical journalism are essential levers to counter this scourge which is plaguing our societies.
It is time for everyone to realize their responsibility in the dissemination of information, by ensuring not to spread unfounded rumors and by verifying the reliability of sources. The truth must prevail over manipulation and disinformation, because it is by relying on proven and objective facts that we can build a more just and peaceful society.
Ultimately, the fight against disinformation is not only about preserving peace and stability, but also about safeguarding our common humanity. By refusing to give in to the fear and hatred spread by fake news, we affirm our commitment to truth, compassion and respect for human dignity.
It is urgent to act together to eradicate this scourge and build a fairer and more serene future for all. The truth is our best weapon to combat obscurantism and violence. Let us make the truth our compass, to guide us on the path to peace and fraternity.
