The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) responded strongly to this senseless act of violence.

The threat facing humanitarian workers in North Kivu province is extremely worrying. Since the start of 2024, more than 170 security incidents have directly targeted these dedicated actors, causing the loss of life and devastating injuries. These heinous attacks deprive local populations of the vital assistance they desperately need to survive. It is imperative that these acts of violence stop immediately to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.

The humanitarian coordinator for the DRC, Bruno Lemarquis, underlined the urgency of a de-escalation of violence and a return to political dialogue to find lasting solutions. He also called for cooperation between parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers and vulnerable populations.

The attack in Butembo caused the death of three people, in addition to the burning of vehicles and motorcycles. These tragic losses demonstrate the cruelty and senselessness of the terrorist violence plaguing the region. It is essential that the international community intensify its efforts to promote peace, security, and respect for fundamental rights in this part of the DRC.

In this time of humanitarian crisis, it is essential that solidarity and compassion prevail over violence and hostility. Congolese authorities, humanitarian organizations, and the international community must join forces to protect the most vulnerable and work together to build a peaceful and prosperous future for all.

In conclusion, the terrorist attack in Butembo is an unacceptable tragedy that reveals the urgency of collective action to end the violence and restore peace in the region. The international community cannot remain indifferent to such barbaric acts and must act resolutely to protect civilian populations and guarantee a secure and stable future for all the inhabitants of the DRC.
