The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains alarming, with the illegal occupation of the territory by the rebel group M23, supported by the Rwandan army. The head of the UN mission in the DRC, Bintou Keita, recently expressed her understanding of the despair of the communities affected by this situation and assured the Congolese population of MONUSCO’s support in the peace efforts.
During a press conference, Bintou Keita underlined that efforts were being made to reach a ceasefire and to resolve the M23 crisis in a lasting way. She also advocated for joint coordination and planning of troops deployed in the eastern region of the DRC, under the leadership of the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC). This desire to pool efforts aims to improve the security and protection of civilians.
The head of MONUSCO also highlighted the precarious situation of more than 100,000 Congolese displaced persons who depend on the protection of the UN mission. She expressed her gratitude to the Congolese government for its diplomatic efforts.
Bintou Keita recently toured eastern DRC to gather key players’ perspectives on the future of MONUSCO. This visit underlines the importance given to the resolution of conflicts and the search for peace in the region.
