**Alarming situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo: the M23 is gaining ground**
The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is extremely worrying, as the M23 rebel group continues to gain ground in the North Kivu province. Supported by Rwanda, M23 fighters have consolidated their hold over a large part of the region, thus challenging the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).
Despite the government’s assurances regarding the measures taken to stem the advance of the M23, the reality on the ground is quite different. The fighting continues, and the civilian population is caught in the middle of this complex and deadly conflict. Efforts made to strengthen the capacities of the FARDC appear insufficient to counter the progression of the rebellion.
Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka traveled to North Kivu province to assess the situation on the ground. She highlighted the challenges facing the Congolese armed forces and the means put in place to support them. However, the partial occupation of territories by the M23 and the activism of other armed groups, such as the ADF-MTM rebels, continue to threaten the stability of the region.
Peace talks between the different actors involved in the conflict have stalled, giving way to sporadic violence and an escalation of tensions. Dissensions between President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame have only added to the complexity of the situation. Recent appointments within the M23 for its representation abroad show a clear desire by the rebel group to strengthen its position.
In this tense context, it is imperative that concrete actions are taken to protect civilians, guarantee security in the region and restart peace talks. The international community must play a decisive role in supporting efforts to end this cycle of violence and find lasting solutions to achieve peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
