Tensions and fighting in North Kivu: Residents flee as rebels advance

Tensions and fighting erupted again in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the towns of Miriki and Kimaka fell under the control of M23 rebels. This conquest took place following violent clashes between the Armed Forces of the DRC and rebels supported by Rwanda.

Residents of these two towns were forced to flee en masse after the rebel attack, which took place at first light. M23 fighters targeted FARDC positions near the Lai-Lai bridge, engaging in intense combat with heavy weapons to finally capture the village of Miriki, located five kilometers from Kimaka center.

Witnesses reported that rebels held a rally in Miriki, causing panic among residents and prompting them to take massive refuge in surrounding villages. Colonel Alain Kiwewa, administrator of the Lubero territory, confirmed the persistence of fighting around Miriki and Kimaka, adding that bombings affected the towns of Kanyabayonga and Kirumba.

The human losses are already being felt, with a provisional report showing five deaths, including a child, and several injured. This escalation of violence once again highlights the fragility of the security situation in the North Kivu region and the vulnerability of civilian populations to armed clashes.

Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are working to provide emergency assistance to displaced people, who find themselves in a very precarious situation. These events are a reminder of the need to find lasting solutions to end the armed conflicts raging in eastern DRC and to guarantee the protection of innocent civilians trapped in the fighting.

It is imperative that the international community intensify its efforts to support peace and reconciliation initiatives in the region, in order to put an end to this spiral of violence which only causes more suffering and desolation.
