On this historic day, the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Interior, Jacquemain Shabani, expressed his sincere thanks to MONUSCO for its invaluable commitment in South Kivu over the past 22 years. This moving tribute was paid during the official closing ceremony of the UN mission office in Bukavu.
In a statement full of gratitude, he stressed the importance of the exceptional work accomplished by MONUSCO in favor of the Democratic Republic of Congo. “The DRC recognizes the commendable commitment of MONUSCO in its favor. I take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to all troop-contributing countries, civilian and military personnel whose contribution has enabled MONUSCO to carry out the various mandates entrusted to it by the United Nations Security Council,” he said.
In addition, the Governor of South Kivu, Jean-Jacques Purusi, committed to sustaining the achievements of the UN mission in his province. He stated with determination: “All our partners who wish to consolidate these achievements are invited to work closely with the provincial government of South Kivu. We will do everything possible to guarantee the necessary security and protection.”
As a sign of recognition and support, MONUSCO generously donated various equipment and some twenty vehicles to the Congolese authorities. This symbolic gesture strengthens the strong ties between the peacekeeping mission and local authorities, thus demonstrating the importance of international cooperation in consolidating peace and security.
This closing ceremony marks the end of an important chapter in the history of South Kivu, but also paves the way for new opportunities to strengthen peace and stability in the region. As MONUSCO bows out, work continues to build a better future for all residents of the province.
