Fatshimetrie: The family of Belgian-Portuguese consultant Joseph Figueira Martin, detained in the Central African Republic for a month, expresses its indignation at what it describes as blatant injustice.
Joseph Figueira Martin, aged 41, was on mission in Zemio, in the south-east of the Central African Republic, as a consultant for an American humanitarian NGO when he was arrested a month ago. Known for his expertise in issues of transhumance and pastoralism, he has worked with renowned organizations such as the International Crisis Group, Global Witness, African Parks and the European Union.
The prosecution recently revealed the conclusions of its investigation, accusing Joseph Figueira Martin of endangering state security and espionage. According to the prosecutor, he was even involved in the creation of a so-called “international terrorist branch” with branches in six countries. Shocking accusations for his family, who decided to break their silence to denounce this “evidence of injustice”.
His brother, Georges Martin, categorically rejects these allegations, which he describes as completely slanderous. He also deplores the lack of support from his employer, the American NGO FHI 360.
This case raises serious concerns about respect for human rights and the fairness of the judicial system in the Central African Republic. The international community must remain vigilant in the face of such alleged violations of fundamental rights.
Joseph Figueira Martin deserves a fair and transparent trial, in accordance with international standards. His family and loved ones hope for a fair and rapid outcome to this difficult situation, so that the truth can finally emerge and justice prevails.
