Historic meeting between Félix Tshisekedi and the governors: towards local governance in the DRC

June 24, 2024 will remain engraved in the annals of the political history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, when President Félix Tshisekedi welcomed a delegation of newly inaugurated governors and vice-governors to the City of the African Union. This meeting, imbued with solemnity and grandeur, was an opportunity for the representatives of the different provinces to present their greetings to the Head of State and, above all, to receive his valuable guidance.

In a climate marked by camaraderie and mutual respect, the number one of the Haut Katanga province, spokesperson for the collective of governors, expressed with conviction the desire of President Tshisekedi to see his governors display exemplary proximity with their fellow citizens. Indeed, the President clearly expressed his desire to see these political leaders on the ground, listening to the needs of the population and engaged in resolving the problems that hinder the development of society.

This meeting, orchestrated under the high supervision of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Interior, security, decentralization and customary affairs, Jacquemain Shabani, is of capital importance in the current context of the DRC. Indeed, it symbolizes President Tshisekedi’s desire to establish governance focused on proximity, transparency and efficiency.

It is undeniable that the success of this approach will depend on the commitment and determination of governors to appropriate the vision of the Head of State and implement it on the ground. By being close to the population and demonstrating listening and responsiveness, these political leaders will be able to truly contribute to improving the living conditions of the Congolese and the harmonious development of their respective provinces.

Thus, this meeting between Félix Tshisekedi and the newly invested governors appears to be the starting point of a new era in provincial governance in the DRC. It embodies the hope of more efficient, more transparent public management and more oriented towards the well-being of citizens. It now remains for governors to take up the challenge and demonstrate exemplary leadership to realize this ambitious vision that brings progress for all the Congolese people.
