The battle of blockbusters in Nigeria: “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” remains in the lead, but “Muri and Ko” shines brilliantly

Movie lovers in Nigeria, as well as those who are passionate about the global film industry, were recently given a glimpse of the cinema attendance figures for the period from June 14 to June 20, 2024. That week, CEAN released a report detailing the top ten most popular films screened in the country, as well as the revenue generated by each.

One of the films that caught the eye was “Muri and Ko,” a gripping feature film that tells the story of a thief named Muri. He unwittingly finds himself in possession of a car containing a child. Despite the N10 million bounty on his head and his determination to escape the police for kidnapping, a unique relationship develops between him and the child. The film, which is a mix of action, emotion and humor, has captured the hearts of the audience and has become one of the favorite productions of the week.

Leading the chart is Hollywood movie “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”. The blockbuster has maintained its top spot at the box office for three consecutive weeks and its success continues unabated. Grossing an impressive N216.5 million, thanks to the N100.8 million it generated during the period under review, the action movie has captivated audiences and maintained its popular status.

However, local movie “Muri and Ko” with its N41.5 million that week has surpassed “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti”, another Nigerian film that topped the local box office for three consecutive weeks. “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” now sits at number four after raking in N15 million during the period under review, for a total of N156.5 million.

Beyond the numbers, these results reveal the vitality and diversity of the Nigerian film industry, with local films such as “Muri and Ko” competing with Hollywood productions to attract moviegoers and tell captivating and touching stories. This film week is a perfect illustration of the richness and creativity of the seventh art in Nigeria, and has viewers excited for future releases to come.
