USM Alger, a prestigious Algerian club, won the African Football Confederation (CAF) Cup for the first time in its history on Saturday June 3, beating Young Africans of Tanzania following a two-game high series level. Although the Tanzanian club dominated the first half of the second leg, the Algiers were able to pull themselves together and clinch the trophy thanks to the away goal scored in the first leg.
The atmosphere was electric at the July 5, 1962 stadium, filled to capacity for this historic meeting. Fans of both teams were excited, but it was the Young Africans who opened the scoring with a penalty converted by Djuma Shabani. Although trailing, the Algiers managed to keep their cool and raise their level of play in the second half. Despite a missed penalty from Belaïd, USM Alger managed to hold the score (0-1) while building on their away victory.
This result caused the disappointment of the Tanzanian players, and particularly of Djuma Shabani, Yannick Bangala, Jesus Moloko, Tuisila Kisinda and Joyce Lomalisa, who missed the opportunity to win the title dreamed of for 88 years.
In conclusion, the victory of USM Alger is a historic first for the Algerian club which can be proud of its career in the African Football Confederation Cup (CAF)
