A roof, a hope: UNHCR improves the living conditions of displaced people in the DRC

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recently took an important step in improving the living conditions of displaced people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Indeed, during a remarkably well-orchestrated intervention, UNHCR provided construction materials and financial resources to nearly three hundred and ninety displaced households residing on the Téléga site, in the territory of Djugu, in Ituri.

This humanitarian gesture is not simply a distribution of metal and money; it is part of an ambitious relocation project aimed at providing decent housing to approximately one thousand three hundred displaced households located on the Telega and Mbala sites. These families, who are currently living in extremely precarious conditions, will finally be able to benefit from adequate housing thanks to this action by the UNHCR.

The dilapidated and cramped tents that once sheltered these households will soon be replaced by houses with two to three bedrooms, thus offering each member of the family a living space worthy of the name. This transition to more suitable housing represents a breath of optimism for these displaced people, who were until now faced with deplorable living conditions.

However, despite this positive progress, the situation remains critical for nearly nine hundred and fifty other displaced households residing on the Telega and Mbala sites. These families continue to suffer under makeshift shelters, exposing their children to significant health risks. They are impatiently waiting to benefit from the same relocation project to improve their living conditions and offer a more serene future to their loved ones.

The UNHCR representative in the DRC, Angèle Dikongue Atanganga, underlines the importance of this relocation project in the search for durable solutions for displaced populations. Despite the organization’s limited resources, she affirms that UNHCR will continue its efforts to meet the needs of the displaced in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In short, this UNHCR initiative in favor of displaced people from Ituri constitutes a significant step towards improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations. Let us hope that other humanitarian and government actors will join this effort to provide a better future for those who need it most.
