**Fatshimetrie: at the heart of current events in the DRC**
In the troubled northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, tragic events follow one another, testifying to the violence that continues to rage. This time, it was in the territory of Djugu, in Ituri, that the Codeco militia struck, causing the death of around twenty people in the villages of Lodjo and Biyanda. This attack was part of a long series of conflicts between Codeco and the Zaire militia, fueled by deep community tensions.
The inhabitants of Djugu live in constant fear, desperately seeking protection from these rival militias who seem to go unpunished. Cherubin N’Kuku Ndilawa, a civil society figure in the region, calls for a strengthening of security forces to restore state authority and protect vulnerable populations. He also underlines the urgency of implementing the disarmament and stabilization program to finally achieve peace, a program signed a few years ago but which is struggling to be fully implemented.
Yet despite peace agreements and calls for restraint, militias continue to fight, often for control of the region’s valuable mineral resources, particularly gold. The army spokesperson in Ituri, Lieutenant-Colonel Jules Ngongo, warns the conflicting factions, urging them to respect the signed agreements. He warns that any violation will be punished firmly, in the name of justice and stability in the region.
This particularly worrying situation in Ituri is unfortunately not an isolated case in the DRC. In addition to clashes between militias, the province is also the scene of terrorist attacks perpetrated by the ADF, affiliated with the Islamic State. Faced with this multifaceted violence plaguing the region, it becomes crucial for the authorities to take concrete measures to ensure the safety of residents and put an end to these cycles of destructive violence.
