Gambaryan, the Binance executive, is currently in federal custody and faces charges of tax evasion and other financial crimes in Nigeria alleged to have been perpetrated by his company.
During a visit to the Binance executive at Kuje Prison on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, US lawmakers French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan called for his immediate release.
They also claimed that Gambaryan had contracted malaria and pneumonia, saying he told them he had lost a lot of weight and was not getting enough medical attention.
Responding to Hill and Houlahan’s claims in a statement on Friday, Minister of Information and National Guidance Mohammed Idris said the detained Gambaryan was legally detained.
Idris also refuted the US lawmakers’ claims, calling them false and baseless.
He maintained that not only does Gambaryan have access to quality medical care whenever necessary, but he also enjoys full access to the consular services of his home government.
“Pulse Nigeria
“It has become necessary for the Federal Government of Nigeria to respond to allegations that Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan is being held in deplorable conditions in Nigeria, or that his health is deteriorating.
We would like to state that these allegations are false and should be ignored.
Gambaryan is legally detained and has access to quality medical care whenever necessary. He also benefits from full access to the consular services of his home government.
The Federal Government will do nothing to compromise his fundamental right to a fair trial and quality care, including health care, even if he is tried under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It is important to emphasize that his detention is ordered by a court and only the court can change the terms or order his release.
The Federal Government of Nigeria will continue to follow the legal process in its quest to bring Binance to justice – a legitimate sovereign quest that is also being pursued in several other countries around the world.
This respect for legal and diplomatic standards underscores Nigeria’s commitment to upholding justice and maintaining the integrity of its judicial processes.
The executive is treated with the utmost respect and its legal and human rights are protected throughout the legal process,” the statement said.
US lawmakers call for Biden’s intervention
Recall that some US lawmakers asked President Joe Biden to guarantee the release of the Binance executive, who has been in detention since February 2024.
According to a Bloomberg report, 16 Republican congressmen, including House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, wrote to Biden asking him to intervene in Gambaryan’s case and treat it as a situation of ‘hostage taking’.
In the current context, it is crucial to look at the different aspects of this matter. The treatment of Gambaryan in detention raises questions about respect for fundamental rights and international standards. The mobilization of American lawmakers and calls for intervention from Biden show the scale of the stakes on a global scale. It is essential to closely monitor developments in this case and ensure that justice is delivered in a fair and transparent manner.
Diplomacy and international relations play a crucial role in these delicate situations. It is essential that the different parties involved dialogue in a constructive and respectful manner in order to guarantee respect for the rights of all individuals concerned. The outcome of this case could have significant repercussions on international relations and the world’s perception of justice. It is therefore imperative that the relevant authorities act with responsibility and transparency to resolve this dispute peacefully and fairly.
In conclusion, Gambaryan’s detention and calls for his release raise crucial questions about human rights, justice and international cooperation. It is essential that all parties involved work together to ensure fair and equitable treatment in this complex matter. The resolution of this conflict could mark an important step in the promotion of peace, justice and respect for human rights on a global scale.
