Anti-drug awareness campaigns are essential to inform and educate the population about the dangers of drug addiction. On this day marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, it is essential to be aware of the urgency of this scourge which threatens society. Commander Obot Bassey, a senior NDLEA official in Akwa Ibom, during a press conference in Uyo, stressed the importance of investment in prevention to combat this growing problem.
The current year has seen an alarming increase in the number of people arrested for drug-related cases, with more than 300 suspects apprehended, including 249 men and 51 women. Among them, 61 offenders were convicted, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. This reality reinforces the need to strengthen prevention and awareness actions to dissuade individuals from turning to drugs.

Additionally, awareness campaigns were conducted in 82 different locations across the state, highlighting the adverse effects of drugs on the health and well-being of individuals.
It is clear that drugs are a scourge that harms society as a whole. Illicit drugs circulating on the market fuel health and safety problems, endangering the lives of individuals and those around them. This is why it is imperative to continue to raise awareness, prevent drug abuse, and provide resources to support those who are struggling.
On this day of awareness, it is crucial to remember that the fight against drugs must not only be punitive, but must also be accompanied by educational and preventive measures. Investing in prevention is the key to protecting communities and ensuring a healthy future for the next generation. Let us remember that prevention is better than cure, and that every individual action counts in the fight against drugs.
