“The revival of ONPA in the DRC: A new dynamic for the fisheries and aquaculture sector”

New dynamics at the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Office of the Democratic Republic of Congo

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Office (ONPA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is experiencing a revival with the recent appointment of new leaders by President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo. The latter were received by the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Adrien Bokele Djema, to discuss the objectives and expectations of their mandate.

This appointment is part of the reforms initiated by the Congolese government to boost fish production, modernize the sector and encourage the country’s food self-sufficiency. ONPA will play a key role in these efforts by organizing the supply of fishing and aquaculture inputs, materials and equipment, as well as the collection and distribution of fishing products throughout the national territory.

In addition to these missions, the ONPA will have the task of setting up fishing and aquaculture infrastructures, contributing to better processing and conservation of products, organizing marketing and market access, and participate in scientific research applied to this field. All of this aims to develop a dynamic fisheries sector that creates jobs and is able to meet the food needs of the Congolese population.

The meeting between the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock and the new ONPA representatives marked the beginning of a new era of work and collaboration. The latter are committed to implementing President Tshisekedi’s vision and to working for the well-being of the Congolese population.

This appointment was announced on July 8, by presidential order, and marks an important step in the revitalization of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in the DRC. Expectations are high, in terms of effectiveness and efficiency in the short and long term, to ensure the sustainable development of this strategic industry for the country.

In conclusion, the appointment of new ONPA coordinators in the DRC marks a turning point in the development policy of the Congolese fisheries sector. With a clear vision and ambitious objectives, the country hopes to strengthen its production, modernize its infrastructure and guarantee food self-sufficiency for its population
