Alliance for Change denounces a plot of power in the DRC to justify searches and arrests of party members

The political party Alliance for Change, founded by the former first vice-president of the National Assembly Jean Marc Kabund, denounced a plot by the power in place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to a party statement, the government would seek to conceal firearms and bladed weapons within their national headquarters in order to justify searches and arrests of key party officials, alleging an alleged link with M23 rebel groups in the region. eastern part.

This denunciation comes as Jean Marc Kabund has been held in detention at Makala central prison for almost nine months, despite the decision of the Court of Cassation to place him under house arrest. Prosecuted for remarks deemed insulting to the Head of State, he is considered the victim of an arbitrary arrest.

The political situation in the DRC is tense as the elections approach. The opposition is pushing for the formation of an impartial National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI), denouncing the risks of manipulation of the electoral process by the power in place. Moreover, the streets of Kinshasa are the scene of regular demonstrations, sometimes violent, due to the generalized dissatisfaction of the population with the impoverishment, insecurity, and corruption of the Congolese authorities.

In this context, the authorities notably made use of police repression and raised the risk of cutting internet access during the elections, raising fears of attacks on freedom of expression and the right to information.

The international community is closely following the evolution of the political situation in the DRC and calls for a transparent, free and fair electoral process
