Fatshimetrie is a news site that addresses relevant and current topics for its readers. Recently, the Cross River State Commissioner of Health shared important information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar. He said although the state has not recorded a case of cholera since the outbreak began in 30 states of the federation, one cholera-related death was recorded around March 2024.

He noted that an outbreak of the disease occurred in Obubura and Biase local government areas between February and April, with one death recorded during the period. This remains to date the only time a case of cholera has been reported in the state.

It is important to note that despite the absence of recent cases in Cross River State, there have been cholera outbreaks in 30 states in Nigeria. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has therefore urged state governments to prioritize access and use of safe drinking water, basic sanitation and good hygiene practices in the communities.

In view of this situation, the state has put in place preventive measures following the NCDC guidelines. Health emergency response teams have been reactivated at local government levels to ensure rapid response when needed. In addition, surveillance activities are being strengthened, and efforts are being made to raise community awareness of the importance of reporting any cases of diarrhea.

Particular monitoring is being carried out in riverine areas considered to be potential hotspots, notably in the areas of Etung, Abi, Obubura, Biase, and part of Yakurr local government area. This aims to prevent the spread of the disease and protect the population against cholera.

The NCDC reported a total of 1,141 suspected cholera cases, including 65 confirmed cases and 30 deaths spread across 96 local government areas of 30 states from January to June 2024. With this data in mind, it is imperative that strict measures are taken to stem the spread of this deadly disease.

It is crucial to educate and inform the public on good hygiene practices, including access to safe drinking water, basic sanitation and appropriate health behaviors. This awareness needs to be strengthened in order to prevent further cases of cholera and protect the health of the people of the state.

Ultimately, vigilance, prevention and rapid response remain the cornerstones of the fight against cholera. Health authorities, communities and individuals must work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all, implementing effective measures to contain this preventable disease.
