Fatshimetrie: Judgment imminent at the trial of the alleged attackers of the “coup attempt”

The Kinshasa military court is preparing to deliver its verdict in the case of the alleged attackers involved in the “coup attempt” of May 19. During the hearing on June 18, the public prosecutor refuted the defense arguments, in particular on the incompetence of the court. The defendants’ lawyers had argued for provisional release, the nullity of the reports and the calling into question of the pre-judicial procedure.

The public prosecutor stressed the legitimacy of the military court to judge this case, based on the provisions of the military judicial code. He notably highlighted the charges linked to terrorism, the attack and the illegal possession of weapons and munitions of war.

In the specific case of Jean-Jacques Wondo, the public prosecutor highlighted his alleged role in financing terrorism and the attack, as well as his affiliation with an armed movement. Concerning Marcel Malanga, it was recalled that the illegal possession of weapons and munitions of war fell within the jurisdiction of the military court.

The hearing also addressed the issue of translation for the American accused, highlighting the choice of language for his intervention. The defendants’ requests for provisional release and medical monitoring were examined within the framework of the procedures in force.

The court has taken all of these elements under advisement and will deliver its preliminary judgment on Tuesday, June 25. This affair, which reveals major issues in terms of national security, arouses public attention and raises crucial questions about justice and public order in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While awaiting the final verdict, the outcome of this trial is attracting the full attention of observers, in a context marked by political and security tensions. The outcome of this case could have important implications for the future of the country and the fight against terrorism and instability.
