In a strong gesture of compassion and call for peace, Pope Francis expressed his deep dismay at the recent deadly violence shaking the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). During the Angelus prayer, the Holy Father called on both the Congolese authorities and the international community to act urgently to put an end to these tragedies and protect the lives of innocent civilians, victims of these atrocities.

The words of the Holy Father resonate as a cry of pain and solidarity towards the battered populations of this region of the DRC, where violence and killings seem to continue endlessly. The pope highlighted the suffering of Christians massacred in hatred of their faith, calling them martyrs whose sacrifice, far from being in vain, carries within it the seeds of unparalleled resilience.

Recent events, such as the attack perpetrated by the ADF which cost the lives of 25 people in Maakengu, only confirm the scale of the tragedy which has been plaguing this region for too long. The numbers of victims continue to rise, demonstrating the pressing need for concerted and determined action to put an end to this spiral of senseless violence.

The Pope called for solidarity, fraternity and compassion towards the distressed populations of eastern DRC. His voice rises as an urgent reminder of commitment to peace and justice, urging everyone to demonstrate courage and determination in the face of these horrors that challenge all of humanity.

In conclusion, Pope Francis’ message invites us all to reflect on our ability to face the challenges of our time, to work tirelessly for a more just, more humane and more united world. May we, like the Holy Father, be peacemakers, bearers of hope and witnesses of universal fraternity, so that the light of human dignity can shine even in the deepest darkness.
