In the mining region of Grand Katanga, mining operators have recently highlighted the crucial importance of developing initiatives aimed at increasing the production of electrical energy on site. At the end of the 9th edition of the DRC Mining Week held in Lubumbashi, this crucial issue was addressed head on.
Electric power is an essential pillar of mining activity. The electricity deficit in this region causes significant financial losses both for mining companies and for the Congolese state. The Deputy General Manager in charge of external relations of Tenke Fungurume Mining highlighted this major issue by emphasizing that every day without additional megawatt production is equivalent to millions of US dollars lost. These losses impact not only economic actors, but also local communities and the entire country.
It is therefore imperative to encourage the development of local solutions in terms of electrical energy production. Relying on imported electricity exposes mining operators to external dependence and price volatility. Encouraging private initiatives in Congo for energy production is therefore a strategic approach to prioritize. Indeed, the DRC has the hydroelectric potential of the Inga dam, an invaluable resource which could not only meet local electricity needs, but also contribute to the electrification of the whole of Africa.
It is high time to take advantage of national resources to meet the energy needs of Greater Katanga. Encouraging local investments in the energy sector would strengthen the country’s energy independence, boost the local economy and support the growth of the mining sector. Close collaboration between the Government, the private sector and mining stakeholders is necessary to implement sustainable and long-term solutions.
In conclusion, investing in the production of local electrical energy is a major strategic issue for Greater Katanga. By effectively exploiting available resources and encouraging private initiatives, the region will not only be able to strengthen its economic attractiveness, but also actively contribute to the sustainable development of the entire country.
