The foreign ministers of the member countries of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) met ahead of the summit scheduled for August in South Africa. They reiterated their call for the reform of the main organs of the United Nations, in particular the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to make it more representative and effective.
The outcome document of the 2005 World Summit was recalled and a comprehensive reform of the United Nations was reaffirmed, including that of the Security Council, to respond to global challenges in an adequate and representative manner for developing countries. Ministers also pledged to strengthen multilateralism and uphold international law.
China and Russia also supported the increased involvement of Brazil, India and South Africa in international affairs. Furthermore, the ministers expressed their concern about the use of unilateral coercive measures which are incompatible with the principles of the United Nations Charter. They also reiterated their commitment to strengthening and improving global governance by promoting a more agile, efficient, representative and accountable international and multilateral system.
This meeting of BRICS foreign ministers is an important opportunity to strengthen international cooperation, strengthen global governance and defend the rights of developing countries
