The drama of baby trafficking: Ogo’s revealing trial before the courts

Ogo’s recent trial before the Federal Court in Awka, presided over by the Honorable Justice Hauwa Yilwa, highlighted one of the most poignant human tragedies that can exist: baby trafficking. The charges against the woman relate to the alleged purchase and sale of a five-month-old baby at her Onitsha address on July 6, 2023. These acts are punishable under section 21 of the Act on the Suppression and Administration of Trafficking in Persons of 2015.

The sad affair came to light after the Anambra State government handed over Ogo to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in October 2023, following an investigation by Fisayo Soyombo investigation. This highlighted illegal adoption and baby trafficking activities associated with his orphanage.

As part of an in-depth investigation launched in response to the revelations, Ogo was arrested on October 3, 2023 at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Women in Awka. Presented in court, she pleaded not guilty. However, she was granted bail of ₦1.3 million and will have to provide two sureties of the same amount to be eligible for bail. In the meantime, she is being held in Onitsha correctional prison. The trial will continue on July 10, 2024.

This poignant story highlights the importance of remaining vigilant against these inhumane practices that exploit the most vulnerable. It also highlights the crucial role of the media and authorities in protecting children’s rights. Let’s hope that justice is served and stronger measures are taken to combat human trafficking and adoption-related abuse.
