In the heart of the Maniema province, the recent release of thirty parrots, mainly from the African gray variety, marked a crucial step in the preservation of local fauna. These birds, carefully guarded at the Dingi parrot recovery and rehabilitation center, have finally regained their freedom after being seized from the hands of illegal operators across the region. This laudable initiative constitutes a victory for the protection of biodiversity and the fight against the illegal wildlife trade.
The process of releasing these parrots was carried out during a solemn ceremony, in the presence of a delegation bringing together representatives of the provincial government, ICCN, the Lukuru Foundation and local media. The operators and the community, initially skeptical about this release, expressed their satisfaction with this approach. Kilimunda Corneille, a witness to this event, shares his feelings: “Certain images were circulating in my head, because I did not believe that these parrots were still interned here. Yesterday, they were carried away by Bikenge cages, all the way here. It was dangerous, they could die during the journey. Now that the center is getting closer, I think it can do something good.”
The commissioner in charge of the interior, Marcel Lembalemba, announced the future signing of a provincial decree aimed at strengthening the fight against the capture and illegal trade of these species. He also welcomed the initiative of the Lukuru Foundation, which actively works for the preservation of fauna and flora in the region. At the same time, twenty-six new seized parrots were welcomed into the Dingi center, underlining the common desire to protect these fragile and threatened animals.
This release of parrots in Dingi represents a battle won in the fight for the preservation of biodiversity and awareness against illegal wildlife trafficking. It reminds us of the crucial importance of preserving our natural environment and respecting the diversity of species that inhabit it. By encouraging these protective actions, we help ensure a more sustainable future for our planet and future generations.
