Large-scale military operations to eradicate rebel threat in dense Mambasa forest

The dense forest of the Bangole group, located in the Mambasa territory, is the scene of major military operations conducted jointly by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the Ugandan army (UPDF), with the aim of dismantling the strongholds of a rebel group that is terrorizing the local population. Since the beginning of the week, detonations of heavy weapons have been echoing through the localities of this area, reflecting the intensity of the ongoing clashes.

The inhabitants of the Bangole group are living in terror, deprived of the freedom to go about their daily activities, particularly agricultural, due to the threatening presence of these rebels. The latter have entrenched themselves deep in the forest, using their bases as starting points for attacks against the local population. The movement of these armed groups towards Mambasa, from North Kivu, is seen as an extension of their influence and a challenge to the military authorities.

The violence of the insecurity hovering over the region was tragically highlighted by the recent ambush, which cost the lives of two passengers trapped on the Kainama-Bunia road, in the Irumu territory. This new illustration of the dangers facing the civilian population is an alarming reminder of the urgency to strengthen military efforts to eradicate the rebel threat.

Civil society and human rights organizations are therefore calling on the authorities to intensify pressure on these armed groups, in order to protect local populations and restore security in the region. The stakes of these operations are crucial, not only for the peace and stability of Mambasa, but also for preventing the spread of insecurity throughout the country.

The results of these ongoing operations remain uncertain for the time being, but the hope of a victory over these hostile forces remains intact. The FARDC-UPDF Joint Forces are waging a determined fight to restore peace and security in this region battered by violence and uncertainty. It remains to be hoped that these efforts will soon bear fruit, offering the population of Mambasa the prospect of a more peaceful future free from the threat of armed groups.
