The Democratic Republic of Congo: a new power in the palm oil industry

The Democratic Republic of Congo positions itself as a key player in the development of the palm oil industry, a strategic sector with major economic challenges. The recent launch of the book titled “DR Congo: The Next Frontier for the Palm Oil Industry” highlights the importance of this country in the field of palm oil production.

Professor Mpoko Bokanga, author of this work, underlines the historical role of the DRC in the varietal and technological development of palm oil plantations. While Asia currently dominates the global palm oil market, he is convinced that the DRC has the capabilities to regain its place and even surpass its competitors.

This pleasing observation is also shared by Monique Gieske, General Director of “Plantations et Huileries du Congo” (PHC), the largest palm oil production factory in the DRC. For her, Professor Bokanga’s book highlights the country’s immense potential in this strategic sector and inspires positive perspectives for the future.

The celebration of 113 years of PHC’s existence marks a turning point in the history of this company which aims to be a key player in the economic and social development of the DRC. The facts mentioned by the Director General, such as the constant increase in production, job creation, social and environmental investments, demonstrate PHC’s commitment to sustainable and equitable development.

Beyond its economic activities, PHC plays a crucial role in supporting local communities through the construction of hospitals, schools and the promotion of renewable energy. This holistic approach to the business makes it an example to follow for other private sector actors in the DRC.

In conclusion, the Democratic Republic of Congo is emerging as a major player in the palm oil industry, with significant development potential. The combined efforts of the government, civil society and the private sector are essential to promote this strategic sector and contribute to the economic and social development of the country.
