“The Media Charter: A crucial step in the fight against hate speech during elections in the DRC”

The day of advocacy and commitment to combat hate speech during elections was held on Thursday August 3, 2023 at the Sultani Hotel. This initiative, the result of close collaboration between media players and professional organisations, led to the drafting and adoption of the Charter for Online News Media against Hate Speech during the Election Period.

This event was marked by the presentation of the content of the Charter, as well as by the preview of the first season of a web-series dedicated to this theme. Many eminent personalities took the floor to support this initiative.

This advocacy day follows a scientific conference held on July 18, 2023 in Kinshasa on the same subject. This conference brought together political actors, members of civil society, journalists, as well as experts from the High Council for Communication and the Media (CSAC), the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and the Association of DRC Online Media (MILRDC).

The objective of this initiative is to promote a respectful and inclusive discourse during the electoral period and to help preserve social peace in the country. This is all the more essential in a context where hate speech can inflame tensions and compromise the stability of the country.

By adopting the Charter for Online News Media against Hate Speech during Elections, media players and professional organizations undertake to promote responsible journalism, based on the values of ethics and respect. They are also committed to raising public awareness of the dangers of hate speech and actively combating its spread.

This initiative is an important step towards building a more tolerant and harmonious society, where political debate is based on solid and respectful arguments. It also underlines the importance of the role of the media in promoting quality information and in combating hate speech.

By supporting this noble cause, we are all contributing to the construction of a united and peaceful Congo, where everyone can actively participate in the democratic debate without fear of verbal attacks and stigmatization.

In conclusion, the day of advocacy and commitment to combat hate speech during elections is an essential initiative to promote responsible journalism and preserve social peace. By adopting the Charter for Online News Media against Hate Speech during Elections, media players commit to promoting respectful and inclusive discourse
