The Games of La Francophonie: A spectacular sporting and cultural celebration in Kinshasa

The long-awaited Games of La Francophonie have finally been inaugurated in Kinshasa, the largest French-speaking city in the world. Despite the multiple postponements caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo managed to organize this major cultural event.

The opening ceremony took place at the Stade des Martyrs, in the presence of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo. A parade of participating delegations kicked off the event, with athletes from all over the French-speaking world. The spectators gave a warm ovation to these top athletes.

Several personalities spoke at the opening ceremony. The Deputy Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs and Francophonie, Christophe Lutundula, underlined the challenges faced by President Tshisekedi for the organization of these Games. Despite the obstacles linked to Covid-19 and the construction of infrastructure, the Head of State was able to face it with commitment and determination.

The International Organization of La Francophonie, represented by Mrs. Caroline de Saint Hilaire, administrator of the OIF, also expressed its relief and its pride to see these Games being held in the DRC. For her, this event goes beyond a simple competition, it is a reflection of our shared humanity and our universal values.

The high point of the evening was the artistic show prepared by the Vivendi group. The natural and human wealth of the DRC as well as its modernity were highlighted through spectacular stagings. Renowned Congolese artists also participated in this stage production, offering spectators a truly captivating spectacle.

The next day, nearly 3,000 competitors aged 18 to 35 will compete in 11 artistic disciplines and 9 sports competitions. The Games of La Francophonie thus offer a platform for encounters and exchanges between French-speaking cultures.

Beyond the sporting and cultural aspect, the holding of these Games in Kinshasa demonstrates that the future of La Francophonie is also at stake in the Democratic Republic of Congo. First French-speaking country by its area and second by the number of speakers after France, the DRC has overcome the obstacles to host this event of international scope.
