During an exceptional press briefing held yesterday in Goma, shocking revelations emerged about the alarming situation in the province of North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Minister of Social Affairs, Humanitarian Actions and National Solidarity, Modeste Mutinga, revealed damning figures: 3 million people are currently displaced in the region, and 7,000 households are in the Mugunga camp alone.

Faced with this unprecedented humanitarian crisis, urgent measures have been taken. A total of 450 tonnes of food and non-food items were delivered to provide crucial assistance to the affected population. In addition, international advocacy is underway to raise $2.6 billion to help displaced people in North Kivu. To date, 10% of this sum has already been obtained, providing a glimmer of hope for the victims of this disaster.

Furthermore, the Minister of Communication and Media, government spokesperson, Patrick Muyaya, underlined the complexity of the situation facing the country. Indeed, it highlighted five major fronts that the Democratic Republic of Congo must manage simultaneously: military, diplomatic, judicial, media and humanitarian. A monumental task that requires exceptional coordination and seamless cohesion from all stakeholders.

In tribute to the 35 victims of the recent bombings of the Mugunga camp, a moving ceremony took place yesterday at the Goma unity stadium. The presence of key members of the government from Kinshasa symbolized national unity in the face of this tragedy, while emphasizing the importance of mutual aid and solidarity in these difficult times.

This case highlights the urgency of concrete and immediate actions to meet the needs of the displaced and vulnerable populations of North Kivu. International engagement and cooperation between different actors are essential to ensure effective humanitarian assistance and sustainable support to those affected by this crisis. It is imperative that meaningful action is taken quickly to alleviate the suffering of the millions of people who depend on our solidarity and generosity.
