The 2023 elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) face many challenges. Political tensions and insecurity in some parts of the country jeopardize the holding of credible and transparent elections, according to Professor Casimir Ngumbi.
During a conference-debate in Kindu, in the province of Maniema, entitled “The challenges of the 2023 elections in the DRC between promises and effective achievements”, Casimir Ngumbi underlined the many obstacles which hinder the electoral process. He notably mentioned the state of siege in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, as well as the occupation of part of the territory by the M23 supported by Rwanda.
These elements of tension raise concerns about the holding of the elections on schedule and the possibility of post-election disputes. Casimir Ngumbi expressed his fear that the December 2023 elections could be postponed or take place in an unstable climate, with negative consequences for the results.
Faced with this situation, the expert calls on the political actors to show compromise and to work in the same direction to guarantee fair and transparent elections.
This conference-debate, organized on the initiative of the General Secretariat for Research of the University of Kindu, brought together political actors, students and journalists with the aim of stimulating reflection on the challenges related to the 2023 elections in ground floor.
It is undeniable that political tensions and insecurity can jeopardize the democratic process and undermine the legitimacy of elections. It is essential that all stakeholders are committed to maintaining a climate conducive to a free, transparent and fair election. Thus, the DRC can hope for a peaceful and democratic political transition, thus guaranteeing the stability and development of the country
