**Fatshimetrie: A historic return expected in 2024**
The nation of Uganda is preparing to host a historic event in September 2024: the return of the remains of holy martyrs Charles Lwanga and Matthias Mulumba to Uganda Martyrs University. These remains were originally sent to Rome by the Missionaries of Africa before the canonization ceremony, where the martyrs were officially recognized as saints.
The arrival of the relics is highly anticipated, marking an iconic moment for the country and the global community. Father Richard Nyombi, a member of the Missionaries of Africa, expressed his enthusiasm for this event which coincides with the 60th anniversary of the canonization of the saints by Pope Paul VI.
A special exhibition will be organized at Uganda Martyrs University to showcase the remains to devotees and visitors. In addition to the relics of the saints, historical artifacts such as a chain believed to be used in executions and a cross made of mvule wood, a material likely present during the historical events, will also be on display.
This event is all the more significant in the run-up to Martyrs’ Day, celebrated on June 3 in Uganda. Millions of pilgrims from around the world travel to the country to commemorate the sacrifices of martyrs, including young pages serving King Mwanga, highlighting the brutality of the persecution they endured.
Father Nyombi stressed that some of the remains of the victims could not be found due to the circumstances of the executions, probably devoured by wild animals.
This historic return of the remains of Lwanga and Mulumba will not only provide the opportunity to pay homage to these holy martyrs, but also to revive the memory of their courage and devotion to the faith. This event promises to be a poignant moment of tribute and reflection for Uganda and the world.
