“Elections in the DRC: CENI defends the most ‘credible’ organization in history, despite criticism from CENCO”

Faced with criticism from the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) regarding the conduct of the elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) maintains its position by claiming to have organized the most “credible” elections in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a press release published recently, the CENI underlines that it succeeded, despite a delay of 28 months, in meeting the challenge of simultaneously organizing four elections throughout the national territory, including for the Congolese diaspora. She believes she has respected constitutional deadlines and overcome various constraints.

The CENI insists that it succeeded in organizing local elections, a first in almost 40 years, in addition to national polls. She claims to have put in place the most inclusive, transparent and peaceful electoral process in the country’s contemporary history.

However, the CENI recognizes that it is not perfect and that it has faced uncivil behavior on the part of certain candidates and electoral agents. She indicates that she has opened investigations in certain electoral constituencies to deal with these cases.

The committee also welcomes the disciplinary actions taken against its staff and the prosecution initiatives initiated by the competent judicial authorities. It recalls that as a regulatory body of the electoral process, it can be seized of any question falling within its competence.

The CENI’s position aims to defend its credibility in the face of criticism from CENCO. She highlights the efforts made to organize transparent and inclusive elections, while recognizing that there is still progress to be made. The transparency and credibility of the electoral process remain major challenges for democracy in the DRC.
