Title: Plateau State Launches PLASEMSAS: Enhancing Emergency Medical Response and Addressing Healthcare Challenges

Introduction :

Plateau State, Nigeria, recently launched the Plateau State Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance Scheme (PLASEMSAS), with the aim of improving emergency medical response and addressing challenges facing the local health system. This initiative is a critical step in reducing deaths and complications related to recent attacks, as well as providing care to injured security officers and first responders. Dr. Bapiga’an Audu, President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Plateau, stressed the importance of a well-equipped and well-managed emergency medical response system.

Address the skilled labor shortage in the healthcare sector:

Dr Audu also appealed to the government to address the issue of chronic shortage of skilled manpower in the health sector, especially in rural areas of the state. This shortage negatively impacts the ability to provide quality care, particularly in emergency situations. It is crucial that steps are taken to recruit and train more health professionals to meet the growing needs of the population.

Condolences for recent attacks:

The NMA President strongly condemned the recent attacks in Bokkos, Barkin Ladi and Mangu areas which resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and called for the strengthening of security forces as well as the provision of the necessary tools to respond effectively to these attacks and prevent further violence.

Strengthening the security framework:

Dr Audu stressed the importance of reforming the security framework across the country. He called for a strengthening of security forces and the use of modern technologies for intelligence gathering to neutralize security threats. He also supported the establishment of a state police force, which would give the state security chief the authority to direct appropriate security responses.

Conclusion :

The launch of PLASEMSAS by Plateau State is an encouraging step to improve emergency medical response and address persistent challenges in the local health system. However, it is essential that measures are taken to address the shortage of skilled labor and to strengthen the security framework to prevent further attacks. Collaboration between government, health professionals and security forces is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens.
