New hope for health in Ruzizi: UNDP inaugurates a modern hospital

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) recently left its mark on the Ruzizi region, located in the heart of South Kivu, by providing the health zone with a new building which will serve as a hospital. This initiative is part of the support provided by the organization to the government, as part of the development project for the country’s 145 territories.

The reception of this new building was welcomed by Dr Alexis Kashobwe, chief medical officer of the Ruzizi health zone, who expressed his gratitude to UNDP. According to him, this new infrastructure will significantly contribute to improving patient care in the region. Before this hospital was built, medical facilities were rudimentary, operating in adobe brick houses. This restrictive situation was a challenge, but the support of UNDP was a game-changer.

Dr Alexis Kashobwe is delighted with the progress made and emphasizes the importance of this new structure for patient accommodation and the comfort of medical staff. Thanks to this UNDP grant, the Ruzizi hospital now has an increased reception capacity, going from 12 to more than 50 beds for hospitalizations. Reception and care conditions are thus considerably improved, making this establishment an essential pillar of local public health.

The reception ceremony for this new hospital took place in Sange, in the presence of local authorities, representatives of civil society and local communities. The enthusiasm and satisfaction was palpable among the participants, testifying to the positive impact that this new infrastructure will have on the region. This exemplary UNDP initiative demonstrates the importance of the commitment of international organizations in the development of essential health infrastructure for the most vulnerable populations.

Through this laudable gesture, UNDP confirms its crucial role in promoting the well-being and health of marginalized communities. This new hospital building embodies the hope for a better future for the Ruzizi region, where health services can respond more effectively to the needs of the local population. By equipping and soon handing over this hospital to the community, UNDP is helping to strengthen the region’s health capacities and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.
