“DRC: political tensions, ICC activism and initiatives for peace and the economy”

The political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is alarming. Members of the “Together for the Republic” party denounced in a statement on May 31, 2023, the establishment of a tense political climate by the government. The deputies and senators demanded the immediate and unconditional release of three political prisoners and called for the holding of free, transparent, inclusive and peaceful elections. They also demanded that the electoral register be audited by a credible body and called on the international community to condemn all violations of the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.

To fight against impunity in the DRC, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is active in the province of Lituri. Special economic zones are also being considered to pacify this province. Political tensions continue with the arrest of Salmon Idi Kalonda Della, right-hand man of Moïse Katumbi, as well as the common front for Congo which is sounding the alarm on the security fragility in the DRC. To fight against this instability, the trial of soldiers accused of violence in the DRC could set an example to follow in the fight against impunity.

Freight transport to the former eastern province is disrupted due to the carriers’ strike in the DRC. However, The Godfather Foundation organized the Young Congolese Entrepreneurs Fair to provide an inspiring platform for innovative projects. In the sports field, Oscar Tshiebwe, the Congolese pivot of Kentucky, remains in the NBA draft list, but the country remains insecure. The Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State of the East African Community examines the security situation in eastern DRC and discusses the cantonment phase of armed groups in this region for peace and security.

In short, the DRC is experiencing significant political, social and economic fluctuations. Local and international actors are working to improve the situation in various areas, but there is still a long way to go before achieving lasting stability.
