Article: A tragic fire in a displaced person site in Katsu, Ituri
A tragedy struck on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, March 14, in the Katsu displaced persons site, located in the territory of Djugu in Ituri. Two children, unfortunately members of the same family, lost their lives in a devastating fire. Among them, a little girl aged only 4, whose innocence was cut down by the flames.
The material damage was also considerable, with around thirty shelters reduced to ashes, leaving entire families without a roof. According to initial information collected, the origin of the fire was a charcoal fireplace left lit in one of the homes on the site.
The situation is all the more dramatic as this disaster could have been avoided. Indeed, it seems that children, by recklessly handling the fire, were at the origin of the flames. This calls into question the importance of educating parents about home safety and monitoring their children’s activities to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Local authorities, particularly the civil protection service, say they are deeply saddened by this event, which only aggravates the vulnerability of people already displaced and weakened by the circumstances. An appeal is being launched to kind souls and humanitarian organizations to urgently help the affected families, who are already enduring the bad weather of the rainy season in particularly difficult conditions.
It is crucial to take preventive measures, ensure regular monitoring and adequate assistance, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of displaced and vulnerable populations. Now is the time for solidarity and concrete action to support those who are suffering and rebuild what has been destroyed.
Together, let’s work together to provide support and comfort to those who need it, and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
