A deadly drone attack rocked the town of Atbara, located 300 km northeast of Khartoum, killing at least 12 people and leaving around 30 injured. This violent attack was carried out during an iftar, a meal to break the fast, which took place on the base of the Baraa Islamist militia, allied with the Sudanese army.

The community of Atbara, until then relatively spared from conflicts between the armed forces and the paramilitaries, was suddenly plunged into horror. The city is of strategic importance as a stronghold of the Sudanese army, particularly because of its position on the road to Port Sudan where the government supported by the military has taken refuge.

Witnesses to the drone attack report that a deafening noise preceded a devastating explosion, plunging the population into panic and chaos. The bodies of the victims and the injured were rushed to the city hospital, revealing the tragic extent of this tragedy.

At this stage, the identity of those responsible for this attack remains unknown. It should be noted that a few days earlier, El-Fasher had been the target of the Sudanese army, also causing civilian losses. This escalation of violence raises worrying questions about the security of the populations and the stability of the region.

Faced with these disturbing events, the international community must react firmly to prevent further tragedies and bring justice to the victims of these clashes. It is essential that light be shed on these attacks, in order to identify the culprits and put an end to these acts of indiscriminate violence.

In these uncertain times marked by violence, it is essential to preserve the peace and security of populations, by firmly condemning all forms of aggression and by working for a peaceful and prosperous future for all.

Fatshimétrie remains vigilant and will continue to closely monitor developments in the situation in Atbara and the region, in the hope that justice will triumph and that peace will finally regain its place.
