Exemplary verdict: The fight against corruption within the FARDC strengthened

The recent case which shook the High Military Court and which resulted in the judgment of Lieutenant-Colonel Jerry Ngoy Katengo cannot leave us indifferent. This verdict, delivered last weekend, marks significant progress in the fight against corruption within official bodies, in this case the General Inspectorate of the FARDC.

Lieutenant-Colonel Katengo’s 4-year prison sentence highlights the firmness of the military authorities in the face of such reprehensible acts. Indeed, his attempt to corrupt agents of the FARDC General Inspectorate in Goma was severely sanctioned, thus sending a clear message: impunity will not be tolerated within the Congolese armed forces.

However, it is important to note that not all of the co-accused were convicted, with the courts confirming the acquittal of Lieutenant-Colonel Kasongo Kapinga Gabriel, Major Nyundu Ngelengwa Israel, as well as captains Alimasi Bienfait and Lasikaba Mokili Innoncent. This decision highlights the rigor of the judicial system in its analysis of evidence and individual responsibilities.

Furthermore, another case attracts the attention of the Military Court, that of the eleven FARDC officers prosecuted for fleeing from the enemy at the front in December 2023 in Lushano. The public prosecutor requested the death penalty in this case, highlighting the importance of setting an example within the military institution. The awaited ruling of the Military Court in this case highlights the importance of judicial decisions in maintaining order and discipline within the armed forces.

Ultimately, these verdicts illustrate the desire of the military authorities to guarantee the integrity and honor of the FARDC, while recalling the need for impartial and equitable justice. The fight against corruption and indiscipline remains a priority to ensure the credibility and effectiveness of the Congolese armed forces, serving the protection and security of the nation.
