The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in the DRC and Head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, arrived in Beni this Thursday, July 27, 2023. Her official visit as part of her tour in North Kivu aims to show the support of MONUSCO to efforts to restore peace in the region.
Accompanied by the deputy special representative in charge of operations and protection, Khassim Diagne, Bintou Keita immediately went to Eringeti, about fifty kilometers from Beni. On site, she will pay tribute to the blue helmets who are fighting alongside the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) to ensure the safety of the population.
In addition to paying tribute, Bintou Keita will also present Eringeti residents with a public lighting project funded by MONUSCO. This project aims to fight against crime while stimulating the economic development of the region.
It should be recalled that in recent days, citizen movements and pressure groups in North Kivu have called on the population of the province to observe two days without activities in memory of those who died during the anti-MONUSCO demonstrations in July 2022.
Bintou Keita’s visit to Beni and Eringeti therefore aims to strengthen the presence of MONUSCO and to demonstrate the continued commitment of the United Nations to support the stabilization and reconstruction of the Democratic Republic of Congo
