The M23 War: A Collective of Victims Files a Complaint for Justice
On Wednesday July 26, the group of victims of the M23 war took an important initiative by filing a complaint against certain main actors of this rebellion at the military prosecutor’s office in North Kivu. This approach aims to ask Congolese justice to prosecute these individuals responsible for the multiple killings and serious human rights violations in the territories of Rutshuru, Masisi and Nyiragongo.
Héritier Gashegu, spokesperson for the collective, explained that the main objective of this complaint was to highlight the Rwandan aggression of which all Congolese citizens are victims, in particular the populations of the territories mentioned. By pointing the finger at the political and military figures of the M23, the collective hopes that those responsible for the atrocities can be brought to justice and paid for their actions.
According to figures put forward by the collective of victims, no less than 1,060 people have lost their lives in these three territories during the past year, from June 13 until today. These human losses represent a real tragedy for the region and it is time for justice to do its job to bring justice to the victims.
By filing this complaint, the group of victims of the M23 war hopes that those responsible for these atrocities will finally be held responsible for their actions and that they will have to answer for their crimes before the courts. This step is a step towards reparation for the victims and an attempt to end the impunity that reigns in the region.
It is essential that the Congolese justice system take this complaint seriously and carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crimes committed by the M23. The families of the victims deserve to know the truth and to obtain justice for their loved ones who died in these senseless massacres.
In conclusion, the complaint filed by the collective of M23 war victims is a positive step towards the search for justice for the atrocities committed in the territories of Rutshuru, Masisi and Nyiragongo. Hopefully this action will spur the Congolese judiciary to act and bring those responsible to justice, to ensure that such acts of violence do not go unpunished
