The alarming increase in cult-related killings in Abeokuta, Nigeria, has recently focused attention and raised major concerns within the community. For more than six weeks, the city has been the scene of an escalation of violence, leading to the tragic loss of lives and sowing terror among the population. This situation can no longer be ignored, and urgent measures must be taken to remedy it.
Honorable Bisi Oyedele (APC-Ipokia/Idiroko), author of the resolution, stressed during the plenary session in Abeokuta that the appointment of a youth commissioner was essential to respond to this crisis. Acts of violence perpetrated by members of sectarian groups have caused an unbearable climate of insecurity, and the recent assassination of several individuals in broad daylight has deeply shocked the population.
It is imperative that government authorities and security forces intervene quickly to put an end to these barbaric acts. The anti-cultism unit of the State Police Command should strengthen its intelligence activities and take preventive measures to curb this persistent menace.
It is also crucial that the governor appoints a youth commissioner to promote productive initiatives for the youth. This manager will have to promote the continued engagement of youth and develop policies and programs in their favor within the State Executive Council. Emphasis should be placed on human capital development through job creation and upskilling of youth across the State.
Members of parliament have called for concerted action by security agencies, particularly the police, to eradicate the scourge of cultism in the state. They called for better involvement of young people, while encouraging residents to provide valuable information to the police to combat this insidious scourge.
In conclusion, it is imperative that concrete measures are urgently taken to end cult-related violence in Abeokuta and ensure the safety and well-being of the population. The time to act has come, and only a joint effort of the authorities, security forces and the community can guarantee a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
